What do bed bugs
look like?

Adult bed bugs are light brown to reddish-brown, flat and oval shaped with no rear wings. The front wings are vestigial and it will have six legs. Despite having wings, adult bed bugs are flightless. Bed bugs also have segmented abdomen that include microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance, and can grow to a length of 4 to 5mm in length, and 1.5 to 3mm wide.

Freshly hatched nymph bed bugs are translucent, lighter in color than the adults and become browner as they reach maturity. Regardless of its age, a bed bug that has recently fed on blood will appear to have a bright red translucent abdomen. That color will fade over the coming hours and within two days it will become black. The bed bug will appear swollen and elongated when it has fed.

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

The first sign of bed bug bites may be itchy and red spots on the skin, usually on the arms, shoulders, neck, face or legs, and typically in straight rows.

Nocturnal and elusive bugs, they feast at night, and typically stay as close to the host (that’s you) as possible. Bed bugs will leave a trail of fecal spots (small dark sand-like droppings that occur in patches around and especially beneath nests). Often a recently fed bug may be flattened accidentally leaving behind visible blood smears on sheets or mattresses. They can also leave behind their empty molted exoskeletons and they often can be detected by their characteristic smell of rotting raspberries.
